  • ·                    What are students intended to learn from the project?

This project is intended to allow class VI students to explore a learning environment in which they can
        1)      Apply various techniques to collect, represent and analyse data
        2)      Demonstrate a critical approach to the data represented in the media
        3)      Justify choices for representing and analyzing

1.1.2    Project Scope:
Describe the scope of your project. This may include class and section, subjects it covers,             self shills to be used etc. as well as other factors affecting scope.

Students from class VI.

Subjects involved: Mathematics, Social Science and English

Student research will be monitored and managed to avoid students going off track and out of scope.

1.1.3    Curriculum and Standards:
List the curriculum and standards this project with cover.

Class VI Maths Curriculum topics and standards related to this project
        ·         State reasons for the need of data collection
        ·         Differentiate between data and information
        ·         Differentiate between qualitative and quantitative data
        ·         State the four stages of a statistical investigation

Lesson 2

2.1 Essential Question:
Put in writing the question that will engage the students

What do you mean by data handling? How it can be used in decision making?

2.2      Grouping Strategy:
Describe the criteria that will be used to form students team and how this maps to the                 goals of  the project.

Each team will have 9 members. Students of each group will be of both gender with mixed ability and skill level.  The main objective of the project is to give an opportunity to students of different ability and skill level to work as one team and to provide an occasion to students with higher ability and skills for peer instructions and to deliver an opportunity to students with lower ability to students benefit from the more advanced collaboration that will arise from this.

Describe the learning environment for the project including any classroom adaptation                 that will be required.

The group working area will be set in such a way to allow the team members to conduct effective interaction. Classroom wall near the project area will be used to post paper materials collected during research. The online work will be conducted at computer labs. Research notes will be recorded in computers/blogs. To provide effective teamwork among the members email, blog, whats’app, messenger and etc will be used.

2.4         Assessment Approach:
                Describe the approach for:
              2.4.1 Authentic Assessment:
 Authentic tasks such as
1.       State reasons for sampling
2.       Design a data collection sheet for a specified survey

The project will be launched in class VI E .
Instructions will be given about the survey to be carried out,  research work to be done and to make the power point presentation.

(5.2) Artifacts:

List artifacts that will be created during the project

Charts on group works
Reports on analysis of data

(5.4) Celebrating completion:

Describe how the students will celebrate when the project is completed.

A “mini exhibition” of the project will be done in the class.

Project Plan - Lesson 6

The Review Phase

(6.1)Student Reflection and Evaluation:

Describe how student reflection and evaluation will be conducted.

Each student will write about their topic, new information gained, new skills learnt, what they liked most about the project and what they did not like. Before writing the reflection, each student will go through their reports, presentations and powerpoints.

(6.2) Teacher Reflection and Evaluation:

Describe how teacher reflection and evaluation will be conducted.

  • Successes I will consider pbl as auccessful if every student understands the purpose of data handling and how it can be used for  decision making.
  • Challenges : To make each student contribute some work for their group will be a real challenge.
  • Achievement of project goals : My goal will be achieved if I can ensure maximum students participation.
  • What I learned : Students gain deeper knowledge of the subject matter

Project Plan – Lesson 7

The Manage Phase

(7.1) Process Management:

List tasks that will be used to manage the process of conducting the learning

Brief Introduction : Data Handling
Each group will be given a sub topic
Group 1 : To find the average age of teachers in their school
Group 2 : To find the average height of students of their class
Group 3 : To find the average weight of students of their class
Group 4 : To find the most favourite subject of students of class 6
Group 5 : To find the month of the year in which most students of class 6 were born
Group 6 : To find the average number of family members of their classmates
Regular monitoring of students works

(7.2) Student Preparation:

Describe how students will be prepared for the project prior to launch. List any specific instruction or tasks that will be needed

The students will be told about the idea for the project 2 weeks before it starts. New ICT tools to be used during the project (i.e. using a spreadsheet for survey results) will be practiced before the project launch.

(7.3)  Facilitation:

Describe how facilitation of resources will be used to enable the students to be successful.

Use of the library and computer equipment will be scheduled and booked in advance.

(7.4) Progress Monitoring:

Describe how program will be monitored throughout the project.

Whole class conference once per week

Group Progress

Team checkpoint meetings as well informally daily checking with teams and individuals on their work.

         Individual Progress

(7.5) Re-planning:

Describe how ‘re-planning’ will be used if the project goes off track

Since student autonomy is low there is low risk of the project going off track. 10% additional time allowance has been included for overrun but the end date cannot be exceeded. There is an option for homework to be used to catch up if necessary.

(7.6) Conflict Management:

Describe how to address problems related to participation, offer approaches to manage other conflicts that may arise.

Teamwork rules will be included in project launch presentation. Students are asked to initially try to work out conflicts on their own. In the case of a deadlock, issues are to be raised with the teacher. Lack of participation will be dealt with by culprits being removed from the project work and set to work on alternative individual tasks for the duration of the project.
